Awhatukee started the largest planned unit development of it's kind in Arizona by the Presley corporation. The name really has nothing to do with Arizona, but from a Crow Indian words awe chuuke, meaning "land on the other side of the hill."
Although annexed by the city of Phoenix between 1978 and 1987, before substantial residential growth, many of Ahwatukee's residents do not strongly associate their region with the rest of the city, due in part to its geographic isolation (South Mountain and South Mountain Park separate Ahwatukee from Phoenix, which lie to the north).As of 2010, the 35.8 square-mile of several planned unit communities, including Ahwatukee, Equestrian Estates, Mountain Park Ranch, Club West, and Lakewood with a population of 77,249.
