Gilbert, Az was started as a Mormon settlement, and became the hay "Capital of America" in the 1920's. That has all changed as Gilbert has many beautiful lush planned communities, such as Val Vista Lakes and The Islands. Most subdivisions have home owners associations to maintain large greenbelts and parks. The city is well planed to include parks, such as Freestone Park with it's kid's railway, and Cosmos Dog Park. Gilbert is located in the southeast part of the Greater Phoenix area. It is one of the cities that is included in a general area referred to as the Southeast Valley. The town offices of Gilbert are about 20 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Gilbert has shopping on almost every corner and a major San Tan Village Mall on the I 202 (San Tan Freeway). Homes values are going up as this has become a very popular city to live in, and is considered #1 in the country in lowest crime rate recently.
